The Law - Asbestos

Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 came into force on 6 April 2012 (Asbestos regulations). The Regulations prohibit the importation, supply and use of all forms of asbestos.

Remember: Existing asbestos containing materials in good condition, may be left in place, their condition monitored and managed to ensure they are not disturbed.

Most asbestos removal work must be undertaken by a licensed contractor but any decision on whether particular work is licensable is based on the risk.

Under the Asbestos Regulations, anyone carrying out work on asbestos insulation, asbestos coating or asbestos insulating board (AIB) needs a licence issued by the HSE.

Remember: Although you may not need a licence to carry out a particular job, you still need to comply with the rest of the requirements of the Asbestos Regulations.

The duty to manage Asbestos in non-domestic premises became law on 21st May 2004.
